Past week there have been major events unfolding between Brazil and the American Press. The Brazilian president, Lula, will be coming to New York in the first week of June. The Embassy requires everybody from the press to be present in D.C. Ana as a part of the press department is therefore unable to visit our festival in person. We do have a solution! Thanks to the video conference we will connect Zlin and Washington with a 20second delay. Stay with us, we keep our promises!

A Campaign of Zlinsky Pes is just running at full speed on TV Ocko and in almost 60 movie theaters in the Czech Republic. Right after finishing a spot that wouldn't be possible to make without our partners - Barrandov Studios, AFM Lighting and ABZ, we attacked fairly big group of film audience in main single and multiplex movie theaters in Prague, Brno and other exposed locations. Now it is very likely that you catch our spot that was made by students and lectors of Film School Zlin.

If you seem to be just passing on Cinema screenings you probably see our spot on the czech music TV channel Ocko TV, where our interview was also released on 17.5. Interview with Lukas Zahor was also accompanied by quiet performance of our awarding ceremony stars Cyril a Martin.

Ana C. Martini has definitely confirmed her appearance at Zlinsky Pes international student film competition. Public opinion manipulation and media communication will be the topic of her workshop. Martini was born in Brazil and has been working in US for last 6 years. She graduated from UCLA majoring with psychology. Currently is working at public affairs department in Brazilian embassy in Washington D.C. Her workshop will be dedicated to political results caused by use of mass-media as a promotional and agitating tool. As Ana has stated: "Media have been used to shape, model and manipulate public opinion for ages. Good example of using media as manipulating tools is my job at Brazilian embassy where we use media to show the positive sides of Brazil to stimulate the tourism and business. An example of a propaganda media use is recent war conflict of Bush government in Iraq. In that case media were used to help the public opinion to support and smooth the process of war conflict."

How to make the human fantasy believe the unreal and create a world of real visual illusions will be explained at second media workshop. Unusual combination of 3D animation with real footage on digital video will be introduced by multimedia creator Pavel Sadilek. Practically step-by-step the audience will be guided through 3D animation production and completing with digital video images. The sub-title of this workshop "It has to be right" is hiding a surprise in form of a music video for well known author that will help to interpret Sadilek's current work. Among the recent works of Sadilek are music videos for Support Lesbiens and Chinaski.

An exciting filming project was shot for the promotion of Zlinsky Pes. Staring the award ceremony speakers Cyril Podolsky and Martin Sinkovsky this spot is an interesting way to introduce the qualities of the competition program. The story takes place in a setting of a fictional restaurant that is very similar to the one in Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. No sky-high budgets, no endless shooting, the filming was done in two days. The heroes proof that there's a dog behind everything in this world. Sometimes dressed in a human skin and clothes though. We made a short interview with the main stars Cyril and Martin:

If you're not getting anything out of the interview then you'll have to wait for the ad. The authors promised to have the spot simultaneously overdubbed.

It is obvious that the film competition will be unique, not only because of the number but also thanks to the characteristics of the films that have filled up the space of Studio produkce 2. More than 200 of films from more than 20 countries had been submitted to the competition by March 20th. Not only Czech and European films are taking part but also films from U.S.A., Canada, Mexico, South Africa, India, Israel etc.

Among the submitted works there are also ones that were awarded at local or international festivals and competitions. The main competition program may consist of films like "K-G for Better and for Worse" - 2nd best short at Cannes Film Festival, "Major and Minor Miracles" - Oscar nominee na Academy of Motion Pictures Arts, Hollywood, "Reparation" - 2nd at Cinefoundation Cannes Film Festival, special award Golden Lion International Film Festival, "Victor and His Brothers" - 1st at Munich International Festival of Film Schools, 2nd best student film at International Film Festival Karlovy Vary, "Čapí Film" - best animated film at Famufest and others.

We were pleased too see how many films are inspired by dogs! All of these great movies are just going through pre-selection screenings: "Roy and dog" (Jesse Davidge, Vancouver Film School, Canada), "Making Dogs" (Marko Fuchs, Film and Moving Image Production,LM, Great Britain), "Mr. J. Russel" animated film about a guy that knows how wonderful it is to be a dog... (Wouter Sel, KASK-Hogeschool Gent, Belgie) and "Dog days" (Jana Jurníčková, Tomas Bata University, Zlín).

Zlinsky Pes is seeking the very best student films for its competition. As the program director Jana Faltynkova stated: "I had a chance to see most of the submitted films and have to say that we found some real yummies!"

Don't miss the opening night of Zlinsky Pes! The very first Daily news will be screened. We'll also be pass our first workshop that will be lead by Isaac Kerlow. We'll be digesting the first competitive screenings and it'll be just about ideal time to have some fun! We promised to play with some modern imaging technology. We promised to bring some great music. We're doing our best and with our united forces of students we bring you VJ-ing workshop where you can get your hands on things that till today you've only had a chance to watch on MTV from your couch!

There're some among us that are not satisfied with watching the never-ending rotation of vinyl records and their idea of fun is somewhere way behind the sound surfaces. Come to experience what it's like to levitate on sound and picture waves at the same time. Come to feel what it's like to drive and control such a flow. You're eyes and ears will be massaged by: Moire (Hucot) a Rootz a Gnina (Undermedia).

Wednesday 2nd June is our lucky dog night. This night is for everyone who believes that being a student is something very similar to being a dog. Well, we talk about the good sides of it of course. Feeling free, droping all responsibilities, playing and having fun. That's basically what Zlinsky pes is about.

Very groovy sounds for dancing will be provided by Šufunky gang. Shortly before the performance we will have a chance to donate symbolic 100kg of dog food to a local dog shelter. A symbolical gesture to those dogs that are not living the free and playful lifes. We all know that with stomach full the good sides of life are more visible. Shouldn't forget to mention that again one of our partners Pedigree was kind enough to help us with our donation request.

Hopefully we get great weather and you all come to shake your butts infront of the open-air stage Velke kino. If you're groovy enough you get Pepsi for free. Isn't that great?

While the real VIP directors are surely slowly getting drowned in bubbles and stuffed by caviar the young creators very often get by with cheap HotDogs. We're not sure if nutrition can affect your directing skills, but for sure when you're young you have something that you loose later on. Well, what a sentence...

Nevermind. What about such names as Chytilova, Nemec, Havetta, Jakubisko, what have they done/eaten during their student years? Zlinsky Pes has literary dog out from film archives their student films and will introduce them during HotDog night screenings on 3rd June. You should get ready for more than 4hours of real film delicacies. The apetizer will consist of 15 short student films of new wave directors. The main course will be the one and only feature film from Cestmir Mlikovsky - The Cucumber Hero. This impatiently awaited debut of young director didn't fulfill the exaggearated expectations and wasn't accepted by the critics while it was spotted even before finishing as potential Venecia festival nominee and schedule in new film clubs as an opening premiere film. Nevertheless it's a significant work describing contemporary youth heroes in the slowly opening atmosphere of early 60ties. Cestmir Mlikovsky wasn't looking for single answer synthesis, used many creative elements, alternated forms and ways of storytelling and worked with many special effects. The Cucumber Hero is prepared from very interesting ingrediences and will give you few moments to digest. HotDog is not only for students. Bon appetit!

What's there for us on thursday? We'll be closing the first run of Zlinsky Pes. The Awarding ceremony will take place in MusicLand A and will be dedicated to awarding of best student films in our competition. Symbolicaly a night before the closing ceremony of the Children and Youth festival students will have their own thing. For the winners this night might be a good help for their future projects. Kodak Vision awards, financial and other awards, together with our partner's presents all that will be given away.

In your letters you always asked us if you get a chance to see the heroes of your favourite soap operas, criminal series, X-files and TV news. YES, they'll be present this year too. Martin, Cyril and many other stars of the same or similar size!

What kind of a Zlinsky Pes would that be without music? Just like every night your ears won't be resting. Soothing sounds from LUS3 and later on Dj Joshek and Grenshaw (Futuristic system).

If you follow our program all the way till thursday we will surely have a chance to meet during after party. And hey, don't be afraid not to be afraid! Zlinsky pes doesn't bite.

Zlinsky Pes will take place during and as a part of The International Film Festival for Children and Youth Zlin, replacing the former non-competitive student film screenings, so-called student section. At the same time it will hold the same spirit as the Film School Zlin10th anniversary celebration that took place last year. Every new year of existence is a reason for celebration and evaluation of filmmaking!

Similar to the Czech Lion or the Moscow Golden Fish also Zlinsky Pes [translated as a Zlin Dog] is seeking the best films and giving you a chance to watch and compare movies whose creators are not limited by deadlines and still have room for discovering their capabilities and possibilities. In 5 categories Zlinsky Pes will find the best and most creative works from film students worldwide. Let the Zlinsky Pes dog out or dig in your film! There is no one else in the jury but you and the whole audience. Let your film get in touch with reality and through in the old bones too! There is no limitation of the production year!

We won't force anyone to do anything we don't like ourselves so visit us not only for the film competition but also to test your directing skills at our directing workshops! Take a chance to see and create together!

Having a good film, sending the entry form and documents is enough for Zlinsky Pes to weigh up with whom to play catch with the Kodak film stock, material and financial awards and of course who to award with the golden hovinko.
